I must say that after years of volunteerism around the world (Bosnia in 1997, Rome in 2000, Turkey in 2004, Jordan in 2006) I was very impressed with the principle of Family Kitchen - Food Bank. It's actually taking what is left from the buffet of the different 5 stars hotels in Amman and distributed it to the poor and needy families. It is amazingly and dynamically run by the two founders and directors, Bandar Al Sharif and Jacki Scott.

I managed to help Bandar out one night and I was quite surprised by how much love for the poor people he has, and how many more families he would like to help in the future. If you ever want to do volunteer work in Jordan I highly recommend for anyone to experience the Family Kitchen fever!!

I totally loved the idea and the way it is implemented. I was extremely happy to meet Jacki (the founder); all i can say is well done!

Quality of food served is from 5 star hotels to people who are in need for food. I recommend any person to try and volunteer with them, amazing experience.

Initiatives like this are what the world and Jordan in particular need. This is my second year (of many to come, inshallah) of participating with Family Kitchen and I can honestly say that this is one of the most unforgettable experiences I have ever had.

It has given me a sense of fulfilment; knowing that I am doing something that, although requires no physical effort for a maximum of merely two hours, can help hundreds of people who are in need.

Right after I have my iftar with the family, my team and I head to Family Kitchen’s meeting point in Shmeisani to pick up the empty food containers that have been washed and dried by volunteers earlier in the day, and that have been waiting impatiently to be filled with all kinds of delicious cuisines that will be given out to families in dire states all over the Kingdom.

After we get the containers, we rush to our assigned hotels and restaurants to collect the remaining food from their buffets. Everything is organized, everyone knows where to be and at what time. All the volunteers are happy to be there, to be working together for a good cause, and to be part of one of Jordan’s fastest growing NGO.

Having collected the food, we drive the containers -now filled to the brim- to the vans that take them to the organization’s refrigerated rooms in Madaba where the temperature is monitored to keep the food fresh.

Distribution of the food takes place the very next day, early in the morning. This is when faces brighten, smiles spread contagiously, and tongues repeat the two words every grateful person utters; Alhamdu li’Allah.

Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As (RA) reported: A man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "Which act in Islam is the best? "He (peace be upon him) replied, "To give food, and to greet everyone, whether you know or you do not" [Bukhari and Muslim]

One of the best initiatives in Jordan, so organized and committed. Their food bank project is so impressive and serves up to 4 cities in Jordan including Madaba, Amman, Zarqa, and Balqa, in which food is picked up from 5 starts hotels and restaurants and packed in a sanitised containers to be distributed later. I volunteered with them this year and they arranged everything for me starting from the badge to the schedule.

What is great about them is that they have lots of options depending on your time and interest and it is all year round. If you have some hours to spare or some cash you would like to donate, Family kitchen will make excellent use of it and help people in need.
